Using white as a backdrop can be so effective - don't you think? In this wedding (photographed by Our Labour of Love) the bride and groom chose white, black and red as their colour scheme - but white is dominant, with only highlights of red and black which is why it works so well. Isn't this hat amazing?! It's by British milliner Stephen Jones, whose work was recently exhibited in London's Victoria and Albert Museum. This hat was designed to look like the first burst of water falling on the head when washing one's hair.

The monochromatic Ascot Opening Race scene in My Fair Lady is one of my favourites and there's an interesting story behind it. Apparently in 1910 the aristocracy all wore black to Ascot, mourning the recent death of King Edward VII, and this is where set and costume designer Cecil Beaton took his inspiration. Beaton, of course, added white and created one of the most fantastic sartorial moments in film. Look at Henry Higgins below who arrives in brown - very clever! (Video: My Fair Lady via Youtube)

On Monday night Bvlgari held a promotional evening for their brides at the Residence, Grand Hyatt, and Jane was asked to exhibit four of her magical dresses. The models stood on cylindrical podiums with shafts of warm light steaming down, as a montage of black and white vintage films was projected on a large screen overhead creating a glamorous, moody atmosphere.
The food... crumbed asparagus, creamy gnocchi with peas, scallops with a dollop of potato puree... was delicious. And for dessert, chocolate fondant with vanilla ice and berries - yum!

Putting an outfit together

Ok, I might be a little slow but I've just discovered polyvore. It's a site that let's you create 'sets' or looks by dragging and dropping different images from the net. Fun! And it could also be an excellent tool for brides trying to put together bridesmaids outfits etc. The look above was very expensive, but they let you select from a range of prices so that you could create an outfit for under $200 for example.

Subconscious Style

Realisation - I think I've been subconsciously trying to dress like Audrey Tautou in Avant Coco Chanel every since I saw the film last month. My eye is drawn to boat necked sailor-striped tops, high waisted pants and tailored suit jackets whenever I go shopping. The beautiful costumes in the film were designed by Catherine Leterrier, overseen by Karl Lagerfeld, and a lot of them are vintage Chanel pieces.

Isn't this wedding that was held in a national park adorable?! The couple were wed under a huge tree decorated with white paper cranes and everyone picnicked on the grass afterwards. So simple and beautiful.

I saw The September Issue last night and loved it. Anna Wintour was the neurotic perfectionist editor you'd expect, living up to her 'ice queen' persona. But the surprise hero of the film was Grace Coddington, Vogue's Fashion Editor, who came off as a 'genius'. She was smart, warm and brilliantly creative - a romantic who charmed the filmmakers (and moviegoers alike).

The Quintessential French Kitchen

The chateau Chenonceau, in the Loire Valley, has got to be one of the most heavenly places on earth. It's situated on the Loire river itself and the surrounds are beautiful. The stunning interior and amazing kitchen quarters are a rustic-lovers dream. I fell in love with the stone floor, heavy cast iron fittings, wooden bench tops and the copper kitchenware - there were dozens of antique copper pieces hanging on walls and seated on surfaces throughout the different rooms. It was here I decided this was the quintessential French kitchen. What do you think?

Back home in our little castle's kitchen quarters, we were inspired to include a touch of Chenonceau style - copper pots... a pure pleasure.

Gaultier's latest haute couture show is inspired by Hollywood film stars and the result is both old world glamour and a touch quirky. I love the hairstyles, music, lights, feathers and sparkle, and I like that it doesn't take itself too seriously - the black and white floating heads of actresses and over the knee stockings made of film tape are fun.
